Sept. 9 - 1.86 Miles, Sept. 10 - 1.93 Miles

Still easing into things. Translation: still being a lazy slob. Although now that Becky and I aren't traveling over Columbus Day Weekend we may be able to head up to Hartford to do the 5K, which could be really fun. Would much rather be in the kind of shape to attempt to run the half marathon (not to mention the full), but maybe an event will be the kick in the ass I need to start taking this all a little more seriously. And I don't just mean the challenge I set up for myself, but moreso the whole not living life as a fat sweaty bastard thing.

Speaking of events, got an email this week about the first ever Massachusetts version of Reach the Beach next May. Details:

Talked briefly to Jen about this on Thursday night. Seems only fitting that I drag her into this if it's something I go forward with as she is the one that got me into this whole running thing to begin with. And it would be great to get Drew to join in to relive the '08 RTB in New Hampshire. And that is about the extent of my running circle. I would love for Becky to join, but don't really see it happening. Gotta start thinking about who we can get to join the dream team because I would love to do this one again before committing to another marathon next fall.

Although Jen and I also briefly discussed going all in with TNT for Rome if it's on the schedule for the Spring. Not sure if training for that would constitute cheating on my 1000 miles in 365 days...might have to think about that as the goal of this whole thing is to run on my own without the promise of a finish line as part of a lifestyle change and not just a running binge, which has been my MO the past few years.

Lots to think about. Back at it tomorrow morning.

Sept. 2 - 1.9 Miles, Sept. 8 - 2.7 Miles

8 days in to this experiment, 2 runs down and just just over 4 and a half miles completed. Not exactly firing out of the gates at a record pace, or even an average pace really. I'm supposed to hit around 20 miles a week, which is 80 miles a month. I know I'm not going to hit that goal in September, but I'm currently living under the delusion that I will get myself into game shape after my slow start and will easily make the mileage up with some distance runs later in the fall. We'll see how that goes.

Becky and I have been running a little bit here and there this summer and the 1.9 miles I did on the 2nd is on the course that we have plotted from our apartment, around the Central Park Meer and back again. It's a very easy run and it is also very boring. The one bonus from last Thursday was that they were shooting a movie on Central Park North so we got to peek at that a little bit as we ran through their set. It's something called Premium Rush with Joseph Gorden Levitt but it sounds like something Richard Grieco should have starred in in 1993. It's about bike messengers or something, so hopefully everyone dies in it.

Today's run was a little longer and sort of difficult. It's still really humid, as it has been all summer, but the bigger problem is I'm really out of shape and carrying a bunch of extra weight since the last time I tried to run seriously at all. Speaking of which, it's been well over 2 years since I ran my last marathon in Alaska. Pathetic and really unbelievable how quickly the last two years have gone. Hoping that I'll have my next marathon in sight by the time I get through this challenge.

Oh - another note from this morning's run. The path I chose took me on the carriage path around the Reservoir for a few minutes and who was out there getting his early morning walk in but Mr. Frank Langella. Kind of a cool New York moment to see him out there doing his thing with everyone else. That was the lone highlight from a pretty crummy run.

Better luck tomorrow.

I have an idea...

Can you guess what it is?

September 1, 2010 - September 1, 2011.

1000 miles in a year.

84 miles a month.

21 miles a week.

3 miles a day.

Think I can do it?

Wish me luck.
